Modern Ship Classes Don't Mean What they Used to Mean

Fletcher Class Destroyer

In World War II, the three main small surface combatants were Corvettes, Frigates and Destroyers. And during this period the average displacement for all corvettes, frigates and destroyers that served in World War II was 943 1257, 1690 respectively.

In contrast the average displacement for World War II cruisers, a large surface combatant, was 8,078.

Today the Arleigh Burke Destroyer at over 9000 tons and the Zumwalt Class destroyer at over 16,000 tons are bigger than the average World War II cruisers. And we don't appear to be calling any of our new ships cruisers.
